Accessibility

The following arrangements have been agreed to improve accessibility on Gala day:

  • DCC are increasing the frequency of the Park and Ride buses on the event day to cater with the increased demand. In addition, DCC secured a new bus service provider that operates larger buses, which again should help cope with increased numbers.

  • DCC Parking Services Team Leader will speak to staff based at the Park and Ride sites on the event day, asking them to reiterate the message that the accessible seats are there for those with accessibility problems. Staff will ask pushchair users if it is possible for them to collapse them during the journey to create more room and free up the accessible seats.

  • Durham County Council are modifying subsidised service 42 which normally operates from Durham Railway Station – Claypath underpass - New Elvet – Mount Oswald. While the road closures mean that it has to omit New Elvet, this year the modified route will include a link between the station and the stop on Leazes Rd at Claypath underpass, running every 30 minutes. This is as near to the Racecourse as buses are able to get to.

  • Where possible, commercial operators running services into the city centre will also usually operate with larger vehicles where appropriate in order to cater for increased demand on the day, all of which are wheelchair accessible.
