On the second Saturday in July each summer, more than 200,000 people from across the Durham coalfeld, the country and further afield pack the streets of Durham to enjoy the sights and sounds the Miners Gala.

Beautiful banners celebrating the region’s working class history are carried through the city to the sound of brass band music, creating a wonderful feel of street theatre and celebration.

The parade culminates at the Old Racecourse ground by the River Wear, where where banners are strapped around the perimeter fencing creating a colourful tapestry of working-class history. By late morning, tens of thousands of people have gathered to browse stalls, enjoy the fun fair, soak up the communal atmosphere, and listen to the platform speeches.

The traders and exhibitors on the Racecourse are a key feature of the Gala and have been throughout its history.
